Ophelia turned into the town about twenty minutes later than she'd intended to. She'd forgotten how confusing those heavily forested roads could get since she'd last visited her mom. It seemed to be getting dark earlier than it should be, and of course just to add to the unfavourable conditions, fog hung in thick curtains around as the car parted them.
She sighed and brushed an auburn strand of hair from her eyes, looking intently at the road. Driving in bad weather made her a nervous wreck, as ridiculous as that was, and she hadn't been here for months. Honestly, by coming here it was partly to check on her mom and partly an excuse to get away from college and visit.
Mum, being the overprotective mother hen she was, never went more than three days without calling, so when almost five had gone by without Ophelia getting a hold of her she thought it best to drop by and see if everything was all right. She was probably just being paranoid, but might as well be safe.
"Not very lively here, is it?" she said to herself. She hadn't yet seen a single other car pass by and the stores all looked closed. "Any way you could look more like a ghost town?" She giggled, a little apprehensively.

Ophelia looked down at the napkin where she had written down the directions with a Sharpie.
"Where the hell is Kline Street?"
She pulled up at a gas station for directions and got out into the thick mist. She couldn't tell if there was anyone inside. "Hello?" She tried the door, but it didn't budge. She knocked a few times. "Anyone in there?"
She scuffed her shoe on the ground, frustrated, and walked back.
The car wouldn't start.
"What the hell?"
The engine stalled every time she turned the key.
"Oh, goddamnit."
After trying for about ten minutes without success, she gave up and tried to turn on the radio.
It was nothing but static.
She hit the 'off' button, feeling spooked. She grabbed her "directions" to her mom's house and set off down the road, feeling the need to get away for some reason.

Coughing nervously, she walked down the empty street. The only sounds were the echoes of her footsteps and her muffled wheezing.
After a couple wrong turns, she finally oriented herself. There it was: Kline Street. She could see her mother's house. Karen's car was in the driveway; a good sign. This momentary bit of relief quickly vanished as she approached and realized the front door was hanging ajar.
A cold chill slid up her spine and she stopped.
Did she want to know what was behind that door? Her mother could be okay...but the signs were pointing to something more sinister.

She rummaged in her coat pocket for her cell phone, feeling stupid both for not going for it earlier and for jumping to conclusions. She dialed 9-1-1 and held the phone to her ear.
It rang once, twice, then picked up.
"Hello?" she said.
She barely made out a voice in the thick static.
"Hello?" she said. "This is an emergency--"
"T-t-t-t-"
"What?"
Distorted through static and skipping, she heard a voice.
"Th-th-this caAAAAAAll cannot be krrrchompleted...die-die-die-aled."
"Shit..."
"Pleasewait and YOU willbe connected to an OPerAT-or-or-or."
She thought she heard a distorted giggle at the end like a demented child, and she dropped the phone involuntarily.
"Damn--" Shaking, she picked it up, but the phone had gone dead.
Ophelia bit her lip but couldn't hold back a deep, hacking cough as she bent over with her hands on her knees.

She couldn't remember much after that, just bits and pieces, as if the whole time had passed by in a haze.
Without realizing how she'd gotten there (she must have walked back, right?) she was in the car again, driving around as if she knew where she was going. And she did--she had this feeling like a magnet pulling her in a certain direction. Hell, maybe she dreamed the whole thing earlier...why would she have walked alone out in the fog all the way to her mother's house and back?
She shook her head. She must be overtired...
Was that a naked man passed out on the lawn over there?
She was DEFINITELY overtired.

The crunching sound of gravel was all that permeated ithee lence of the foggy night, as Terrence wrapped himself in his cloak and pressed on towards the house before him. The house itself was spooky looking; it seemed unoccupied, deserted, as if no one was there. Even the car parked in front did not seem to signify life the way it should have.
Continuing his trek onwards, Terrence finally reached the front door and peered inside, makng sure no one was around. As expected, he couldn't seem to find anyone, and he entered swiftly, gripping his spear tightly in hand.
Quickly rummaging through the house, Terrence picked out a large hunting knife from one of the closets, a few spare lighters lying around in the basement, and anything else he thought might be useful.
Food was next on his list, and the white-haired, gaunt man quickly filled his belly ravenously, as if he hadn't eaten anything for weeks. His blue eyes sparkled for a moment in momentary happiness, before clouding over strangely. The tall man set his spear down on the floor, and bent over, retching terribly. The sounds carried quite a bit, seeing as there was no one around and no sound besides them.
After a few minutes of this, terrence stood, more determined than ever despite his weakened state.
It was time.
